1. Book through third parties
Use Hostel world, Booking.com, Agoda or Expedia: You can find good offers on their web pages plus honest ratings. On top of that you are able to compare different hostels/ hotels .
2. Stay with locals
Try Couch surfing! How exciting to stay with locals and usually it is free. But be careful and read carefully through the descriptions. Personally I just look for couch surfing hosts that had a lot of guests. I recommend using the App Couch surfing.
3. Memberships:
You can save money by subscribing as a member for a hostel chain. YHA Australia is for example offering memberships. You automatically become one by booking at least one night. You can benefit from great offers. Check it out!
4. Weekly/ Fortnightly/ Monthly Rates:
If you plan to stay for a little longer it is definitely good to call the hostel up and ask for a weekly price if you can’t see anything like this online. Most Hostels are offering those specials.
5. Free Upgrades:
You can always ask to get an upgrade by check- in. Depending on where you staying and when it can be that it’s not that busy at the moment. You can always ask for free upgrades
6. Work for Accommodation:
If you plan to stay a little longer at a place, you just arrived and are looking for a job. Some hostels offer to work for accommodation. This might be in housekeeping, reception or handyman. In this case you don’t have to spent money for accommodation and even earn a little money on top of it.
7. House sitting:
If you are lucky you find a nice place to house sit/ pet sit. While the owners are gone they leave you with the responsibility to look after their houses and their pets.
